Celebrating the procession of the Mikoshi.

Celebrating the procession of the Mikoshi.

A Japanese man clapping his hands in celebration of the procession of the shrine at the traditional Sanja Matsuri Festival in Japan. This photograph was taken by Jim Epler at 11:29 AM on 5/19/2007 in Tokyo, JPN near the Asakusa Sensoji Temple. It is cataloged under the terms travel, holiday, people, cities, art, signs & symbols and style & fashion in this photography database.

This image was recorded on digital media using a Canon Digital Rebel xTi camera with a Canon 17-40mm f/4 L lens stopped to f 7.1 and exposed at a speed of 1/160 sec.

Photographer Comments: The Festival of Asakusa Shrine dates back to the Edo period. One of the main events consists of people from respective neighborhoods carrying in their local shrines for a purification ceremony at the main temple. It is rumored that many of the men who carry the shrines into the ceremony are members of the yakuza or Japanese mafia. I'm not sure if it's true, but there were some rather tough looking characters in the crowd!

Additionally, Jim thought of search phrases (i.e. terms) that a person who is actively seeking pictures on the Internet related to this particular topic might employ when performing his or her exploration including the words shrine, temple, japanese, japan, festival, Mikoshi, asakusa and tokyo, so he included these on this details page as a service to himself and others who would like to download this royalty free photograph!
